Pina Bausch

Pina Bausch, the celebrated German dancer and choreographer, director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, was in Calcutta recently. She is one of the giant figures of modern dance.

She is preparing an “India piece” to be staged next year, and was here with her group in this connection.

The Goethe Institut in Calcutta arranged for their visit to Talimi Haq School in Priya Manna Basti, a century-old jute-workers’ settlement in Howrah (across the river from Calcutta) where I began working 10 years ago.

As I was in Germany at that time, I was unable to meet them and take them around. But my colleagues Prodyut, Hasnain , Amina and Binod took care of everything. I believe it was a pleasant and happy experience for all.

I hope I will be able to see Pina Bausch’s production when its staged!

Pina sounds intriguing! It sounds as if her "India piece" will be worth the wait.

Hi Rama,
That sounds very exciting! I look forward to the moment we can see her Indian piece in Europe. My daughters when they were little went to Indian dance classes (they had a friend with Indian roots). One of them is now 3rd year student to become a professional dancer. Am very intrigued by the concept of 'movement', in the sense that I believe Indian dance scholars believe that physical movement was used as a communication system before language developed. Pina Bausch’ beautiful quote illustrates the connection between physical movement and internal movement, ie. being moved, emotion.
Earlier this year I saw Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s pieces A Love Supreme and Raga for a Rainy Season, which left a deep impression. I sincerely hope you get to see the new Pina Bausch performance. Let us know when you do.
Best,
Jan
