O Mein Papa
Paul Burkhard's 1939 German classic, sung (in French, "Oh! Mon Papa") by Yvann Sangsue.
German lyrics here, French lyrics here.
The English version, "Oh! My Pa-Pa", by Eddie Fisher (1954):
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my pa-pa, he always understood.
Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter
Oh, my pa-pa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown so funny in his way
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

i was put to sleep as an infant by my father singng this song. he was not a singer. this was the only thing he ever sang. growing up, i found a record in the house with an instrumental version of this song. my father is no more, and this song is one of the most intimate ways with which i remember him. as a father myself, i put my sons to sleep with this song, one of them used to drowsily say, 'say bonderful' when i put him to bed ... i dont think any son who has lost his father can hear this song without breaking into tears.
