On Design

In India one would find ‘good design’ – but in an entirely venal form. Here is a perfect fusion, but of evil intent and meticulously crafted horrid method. Here is design, but oriented to maximise exploitation of consumers as well as degradation of society as a whole...

So I wrote in an article titled "Design is Love", in the December 2007 issue of Mail of the Month of the Association for Design and Advertising (Sweden).

Your article illustrates a typical situation where corruption and vested interests sabotage well- meaning efforts.

However, inspite of our great wealth of traditional arts and crafts and reputed learning institutions, qualty design in contemporary India is relegated to a marginal and elitist sphere.

The vast bulk of items and products available here are obviously of an abysmal standard, not to mention the compulsion to copy 'phoren' products.

What an intriguing article. You have done a great job of articulating the major ideas related to this art form.
