Peace Train
by Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam
Now I've been happy lately
Thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be
Something good has begun
I've been smiling lately
Dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be
Someday its going to come.
For out on the edge of darkness
There runs the peace train
Peace train take this country
Come take me home again
Peace train sounding louder
Ride on the peace train
Come on the peace train
Peace train's a holy roller
Everyone jump upon the peace train
This is the peace train
Get your bags together
Come bring your good friends too
Because it's getting nearer
Soon it will be with you
Come and join the living
It's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer
Soon it will all be true
Peace train sounding louder
Ride on the peace train
Come on the peace train
I've been crying lately
Thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating?
Why can't we live in bliss?
For out on the edge of darkness
There rides the peace train
Peace train take this country
Come take me home again
Peace train sounding louder
Ride on the peace train
Come on the peace train
Come on, come on, come on the peace train

This was very moving, but mainly for me in the sense that Cat Stevens was at the very pinnacle of the singer-songwriter's art, full of an edgy passion and deepest yearning. Amongst millions of his fans, I felt a sense of loss when he turned to Islam, almost as if he had committed suicide. Of course it is his life, and he has found his peace I suppose. But he has lost his edge whilst Bob Dylan never has.
Yes, I too had been a fan of his in the 70s, and also listened a lot to his songs later in the early 80s. But even as he was lost to the music world, he was doing other things, fulfilling for himself, and also I would like to think for others. And he has now released an album as well.
Indeed he has. It's called "An Other Cup":

I enjoy listening to it, be it on my iPod or whilst pootling along in the car! It brings a certain sense of calm whilst negotiating the hordes during the morning commute...
One of his songs, "Wild World", was played as background music in a television programme last week, which made me remember some of the songs that I listened to during the late '70s and the '80s. The one that sticks in my mind the most is his version of the hymn "Morning Has Broken".
