The One-Straw Revolution is compulsory reading for all who wish to bring about change, not only in agriculture, but how we view the whole process of growing food.
This book has been translated into many languages.
The English translation from the Japanese, by Chris Pearce, Tsune Korosawa, and Larry Korn (first published in 1978) was “a communal effort by the student workers on the mountain.” It has a Preface by Wendell Berry, in which he recalls William Wordsworth’s lines:
Our meddling intellect
Misshapes the beauteous forms of things –
We murder to dissect.
Berry also quotes William Blake:
He who binds to himself a joy
Doth the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity’s sunrise.
The book has two “Nature's Food Mandala” diagrams – which blew my mind. I am reproducing these below.
